Smokey Robinson, the legendary Motown artist, is now facing a criminal investigation in Los Angeles after sexual assault allegations have surfaced. Now, four women have answered the call by filing a lawsuit against him in the Los Angeles Superior Court. They claim that his pattern of misconduct dates back as far as 2006. The Hispanic women are suing for minimally $50 million in damages. They’re calling for a jury trial. They portray Robinson, a previously convicted man, as a “sick and serial rapist” who “needs to be locked up.”
The suit, filed on May 6th, 2023, alleges that Robinson coerced the women into sex acts. In other words, the plaintiffs had a deeply embedded fear of losing their livelihoods. They feared family retaliation and shame which prevented them from speaking out earlier. The allegations against Mr. Rivera are just as damaging and present a similar threat to the reputation of a famous recording artist. This same person was the unsung talent scout for Motown.
Robinson has firmly denied the allegations. In fact, his legal team is already prepping to move to have the case dismissed. They’re describing the lawsuit as a “bizarre” move to play with public opinion. In an official statement, they emphasized that the plaintiffs are trying “to enlist the public as an unwitting participant in the media circus they are trying to create.”
“We feel confident that a determination will be made that Mr. Robinson did nothing wrong, and that this is a desperate attempt to prejudice public opinion.” – Christopher Frost, Mr. Robinson’s lawyer
The legendary Motown artist is known for his classic songs. Whether it’s “Tracks of My Tears,” “Shop Around,” or “Tears of a Clown,” each song highlights this remarkable man’s gifts. He penned multiple chart-topping hits for performers such as Mary Wells and The Temptations. This accomplishment cemented his legacy in the music world. If true, this legal tussle could be the scandal that finally eclipses his extraordinary career.
Frost showed that there is more to come as they gear up for their legal battle. He called on the public to withhold judgment until all of the facts have come to light.
“We ask anyone following this case to reserve judgment as the evidence comes to light.” – Christopher Frost
As the case continues to progress through the court system, Robinson’s lawyers are continuing to fight for Robinson’s rights and insist that he’s innocent. They claim that the allegations result from a desire to produce sensationalism rather than truth.
“Because exposure to the truth is a powerful thing.” – Mr. Robinson’s lawyer (via BBC)
