Three were hospitalized after a shooting that spilled out of the local teen dance club and into Featherly Park in Orange County, California, on May 4. At the time, the incident was occurring equally as the state was preparing to host thousands of Volkswagen enthusiasts—the very state planned for a nine-year-old’s birthday party. Local law enforcement officials have confirmed the shooting incident to authorities. They further stated that at least one other person was treated for injuries after being hit by a vehicle during the melee.
Testifying, Andrea Montano recounted the fear that took hold of the crowd during the incident. In an interview with KTLA, Montano explained that moments after arriving at the park, he began to hear gunfire. She immediately told her daughter to take refuge inside their organization’s RV as they remained on the lookout for what would unfold next.
“I heard the shots right away and of course you’re looking to see where they’re coming from, so I told my daughter to get in the RV and we were just waiting to see what was happening, what was going to transpire.” – Andrea Montano
The Orange County Sheriff’s Department has reported that the shooting suspect was injured in the incident. They were part of a group of three people that was hurried to the hospital. The department announced that the suspect initially headed back to Canyon RV Park. There, he attempted to run over another victim with his car. He then got out of the car and started shooting, eventually shooting himself.
Local authorities were quick to respond, closing off the scene and providing medical assistance to the injured. Such was the scene as participants of Intersectionality Matters! fled from the active shooter situation and recounted experiences to each other while bloodshed played out all around.
