As respiratory illnesses sweep across the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports a worrying surge in norovirus and RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) cases, while COVID-19 rates remain comparably low to last year. Wastewater activity indicates an elevated presence of COVID-19, yet hospitalizations for the virus are significantly reduced. Meanwhile, flu activity is rampant, with nearly all states reporting high or very high levels of flu-like symptoms.
The CDC reports that norovirus is at a five-year high, with positive tests reaching 22%, surpassing the typical seasonal high of 15%. The situation is similarly concerning for RSV, with eight states registering "very high" detections and positive test rates at 13%. Wastewater monitoring reveals that 14 states are also grappling with elevated RSV levels. These findings signal a challenging period for public health officials, as they contend with multiple respiratory threats.
Influenza continues to impact millions across the nation. The CDC estimates that 5.3 million individuals have contracted the flu this year, resulting in 63,000 hospitalizations and contributing to 2,700 deaths, including 11 children. Nearly 19% of influenza tests return positive results, reflecting widespread transmission. Wastewater monitoring records flu activity as "moderate," yet the pervasive nature of the virus remains concerning.
COVID-19 infections persist, albeit at a reduced rate compared to last year. Approximately 7% of COVID tests are positive, and wastewater data indicates "high" activity. However, hospitalization rates for COVID-19 have declined to less than half of what they were at this time last year. This decline provides a glimmer of hope amid the current landscape of respiratory illnesses.
Most U.S. states are experiencing significant flu-like activity, exacerbating the burden on healthcare systems already stretched by RSV and norovirus surges. Public health authorities continue monitoring wastewater data to track viral levels and inform mitigation strategies.
