In a significant turn of events, 20 foreign workers have been released amidst a temporary ceasefire, bringing hope to families enduring months of uncertainty. Among those rescued is Kaid Farhan Elkadi, a 52-year-old father of 11 and grandfather of one, who was liberated by the Israeli Defence Force (IDF) during a "complex operation" in the southern Gaza Strip on 27 August 2024. This operation highlights the ongoing efforts to free hostages held in conflict zones.
The ceasefire has also led to the release of Emily Hand, a nine-year-old held in Gaza without her family, and Roni Krivoi, a 25-year-old sound engineer kidnapped during the Supernova music festival. Sharon Avigdori, a drama therapist, and her 12-year-old daughter Noam were released alongside other relatives of Dr. Haran, who were abducted from Be'eri. These developments mark a crucial step toward resolving the humanitarian crisis in the region.
Fernando Marman, 60, and Louis Har, 70, were rescued during the fighting in Rafah, southern Gaza, on 12 February. The release of siblings Noam Or, 17, and Alma Or, 13, on 25 November, further signifies the progress made in negotiations. Romi Gonen, 24, who appeared in the first hostage video released by Hamas after being ambushed while escaping the Supernova festival, is another individual whose freedom has brought relief to her family and supporters.
Judith Raanan and her daughter Natalie Raanan, both U.S. citizens, were freed on Friday, 20 October 2023. The release of elderly women Nurit Cooper and Yocheved Lifschitz on Monday, 23 October 2023, underscores the broad spectrum of individuals affected by this situation. Meanwhile, Ori Megidish, an Israeli soldier, regained freedom during ground operations in Gaza on 29 October 2023.
Sharon Aloni Cunio and her three-year-old twin daughters Ema and Yuly have also been released. However, Sharon's husband and the twins' father, David Cunio, remains in Gaza. The rescue of Noa Argamani, Almog Meir Jan, Andrei Kozlov, and Shlomi Ziv during a daylight raid by the IDF in central Gaza on 8 June 2024 exemplifies the risks involved in such missions.
Tragically, Chen's husband Nadav and their 20-year-old daughter Yam were killed by Hamas. Despite these losses, a total of 120 hostages have been freed from captivity to date. This includes 81 Israelis and 24 foreign nationals released as part of a previous agreement between Israel and Hamas during a week-long ceasefire in November 2023.
