Rams and Stafford Find Common Ground in Contract Negotiations

The Los Angeles Rams have successfully concluded contract negotiations with veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford, ensuring his place on the team for the foreseeable future. Amidst speculation about Stafford's future, the Rams explored his market value by allowing his agent to engage with other teams. Ultimately, the two parties reached a mutually satisfying agreement, reaffirming Stafford's commitment to the team.

Matthew Stafford, 37, completed 65.8% of his passes last season, accumulating 3,762 yards over 16 games. He recorded 20 touchdowns against eight interceptions, showcasing his continued prowess as a quarterback. The Rams, aware of the contract decision looming due to Stafford's two remaining seasons on his existing deal, commenced negotiations that were anticipated by many.

"There was always going to have to be a decision on our part… if he wasn't going to be here," – Sean McVay

In March 2022, Stafford signed an extension with the Rams, and now, as he enters his fifth season with the team and his 17th in the NFL, both parties have again found a resolution that aligns with their goals. Rams coach Sean McVay expressed relief at the outcome of negotiations, highlighting the collaborative spirit between Stafford and the Rams' front office.

"And I think, fortunately, we were able to come to a compromise and a conclusion that everybody feels really good about, and I think it's a great reflection of him and our group." – Sean McVay

Looking ahead, the Rams' roster for 2025 includes Stafford and Stetson Bennett, a fourth-round pick from 2023. With Bennett's potential still unfolding, Stafford's veteran presence provides stability and leadership for the team. Coach McVay anticipates similar contract discussions with Stafford in the future, though he humorously suggested these may not be as prolonged as past negotiations.

"Here's the positive: Last year it took about seven months," – Sean McVay

Despite the lengthy negotiation process last year, McVay is optimistic that next year's talks will be more streamlined.

"That was never something that I ever thought would occur." – Sean McVay
