Further, Scott Bessent, the U.S. Treasury Secretary, announced that trade talks with Chinese officials in recent days have been “productive.” A very timely remark made by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry from Switzerland underscored the importance of the discussions had with senior Chinese leadership. Interactive Development Initiatives Bessent conducted high-level meetings with the vice premier of China and two vice ministers. He called them “integrally involved” in the conversation that has continued.
On Saturday evening, Scott Bessent and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer briefed President Donald Trump regarding the progress of the trade talks. Bessent promised to make sure that President Trump “is kept closely informed” about all of these discussions and what they yield. First, the Treasury Secretary praised the resulting negotiations as a “remarkable” and “remarkably high” amount of productivity. This is something to celebrate and reflects a rosy direction in U.S.-China trade relations.
Bessent closed by promising that CPA will provide more information on these trade negotiations. A complete briefing is planned for Monday morning. We’ll be looking for details on actual agreements or proposals stemming from these talks in this forthcoming briefing. Unlike the previous two years, no specifics were provided in the immediate wake of the negotiations.
Bessent testifying before the House Financial Services Committee on May 7, 2025. As you can see, this hearing was held on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. The title of the hearing has not yet been announced. Whatever the plan’s shortcomings, it was presumably targeted at lessening economic policy and international trade issues.
A cadre of photographers captured most important moments of Mr. Bessent’s appearances. The best of these, in our opinion, was taken by Nathan Howard for Reuters on the day that he testified before Congress. This photo serves to underscore Bessent’s tremendous impact as a key architect of U.S. financial and trade policy.
