Pope Francis to Undergo Hospitalization for Bronchitis Treatment in Rome

Pope Francis, 88, is set to be admitted to the Gemelli hospital in Rome to receive treatment and undergo tests for bronchitis. The pontiff will arrive at the hospital following his morning audiences on Friday. This marks another battle with health issues for Pope Francis, who previously had part of one of his lungs removed at the age of 21 and received treatment for bronchitis at the same hospital in March 2023.

The Pope has been exhibiting symptoms of bronchitis for several days, which has impacted his ability to perform his usual duties. Due to these health challenges, he has delegated officials to read his prepared speeches at various events. Notably, he asked a priest to read part of his speech due to his difficulties with the illness.

"Let me ask the priest to continue to read, because I cannot yet, with my bronchitis. I hope that next time I can," – Pope Francis

In recent weeks, Pope Francis has held meetings at his Vatican residence in an effort to rest and recover from his illness. Despite his efforts, the illness has persisted, forcing him to cancel a planned trip to the United Arab Emirates for the COP28 climate summit in December.

Having led the Roman Catholic Church for nearly 12 years, Pope Francis's health remains a concern for many followers. His ongoing struggle with bronchitis has notably affected his speech, prompting aides to read on his behalf during a mass on Sunday and at last Wednesday's general audience.

The decision to admit him to the hospital underscores the severity of his condition and the importance of addressing it promptly. The Gemelli hospital, a trusted institution for the Pope's medical care, will provide the necessary treatment and tests to aid in his recovery.
