Pope Francis Faces Health Challenges as Double Pneumonia Keeps Him Hospitalized

Pope Francis remains hospitalized at Rome's Gemelli hospital after suffering a constriction of his respiratory airways similar to an asthma attack on February 14. Initially admitted with severe respiratory problems, the pontiff's condition rapidly worsened into double pneumonia, a serious infection affecting both lungs. For the third consecutive week, the Vatican announced that Pope Francis would not lead his usual Sunday prayers with pilgrims in St. Peter's Square. Instead, the text of the Angelus prayer was published for the faithful.

The Holy Father's clinical condition remains stable, though the prognosis is still considered guarded. Having been hospitalized for over two weeks battling double pneumonia, the Vatican reports that Pope Francis has not experienced further breathing crises. Despite this, he has faced multiple health issues over the past two years. His susceptibility to lung infections stems from a bout of pleurisy as a young adult, which resulted in the partial removal of one lung.

Medical updates indicate that Pope Francis does not have a fever or an increased white blood cell count, signs often associated with infection. His blood flow and circulation are reported to be stable. To support his breathing, the pope requires non-invasive mechanical ventilation and alternates this with long periods of high-flow oxygen therapy.

Since entering the hospital, Pope Francis has not been seen in public. This marks his longest absence from public view since his papacy began in March 2013. The Vatican has not provided an estimated duration for his treatment and recovery.
