A Palestinian comedian known as Mo has captured audiences worldwide with his latest show on Netflix, which explores the complexities of the Palestinian experience. Set in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, the series offers a poignant look into the life of a Palestinian refugee learning to adapt to new surroundings while seeking US citizenship. The show, which has received widespread acclaim, has left Mo both proud and deeply affected.
The West Bank serves as the backdrop for Mo's narrative, a region home to an estimated three million Palestinians and half a million Jewish settlers. The show follows the protagonist and his family as they navigate life under occupation, encountering various challenges such as heightened security scrutiny at checkpoints controlled by Israeli soldiers and being subjected to tear gas. In the emotional finale, viewers witness Mo's return to his family home in the West Bank on 6 October 2023.
Mo emphasizes that his intention was to capture "the main strokes" of the Palestinian experience. He intentionally avoided including events from 7 October in the storyline, stating that it was a deliberate choice. Mo shared, "Avoiding 7 October in the storyline was 'very intentional'." This decision underscores his commitment to focusing on personal experiences rather than global political narratives.
The series has resonated deeply with audiences, many of whom found the final episode particularly moving. Mo reflected on the overwhelming response, stating, "I've gotten so many calls from people just completely in shambles after watching the last episode and how meaningful it was to them to watch." Despite the emotional toll, Mo remains hopeful about future possibilities. He shared, "If you do, then it becomes a really, really sad place whenever you're devoid of hope."
Throughout the show's creation, Mo faced significant pressure from fans and external voices about how he should represent the Palestinian story. He acknowledged this challenge, saying, "There's a lot of pressure from the fans… more outside voices of what I should say and not say – both Palestinian and non-Palestinian." However, he remained steadfast in his vision, stating, "You really have to put the blinders on and stay focused on telling the story that I know and that I've experienced first-hand."
Mo's portrayal of life in the West Bank also highlights broader political tensions. While Palestinians claim the areas for a future independent state and call for all settlements to be removed, Israel disputes the assertion that these settlements are illegal under international law. These disputes add layers of complexity to the narrative that Mo seeks to convey.
The comedian acknowledges the limited representation of Palestinians in television and film, feeling a sense of responsibility to continue the conversation. He stated, "Those that agree with me or disagree with me… it's important to continue the dialogue and have a conversation." Mo cannot simply "walk away" from being perceived as a spokesperson for Palestinians.
While Mo poured his soul into creating the show, he admits that it was a painful process. He expressed, "You weren't really tracking them, the emotions of them," referring to the emotional journey depicted in the series. Despite this, he remains optimistic about storytelling's power to foster understanding and dialogue.
