Lando Norris showcased his exceptional driving skills during the second practice session of the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, leading a strong McLaren one-two finish. Norris clocked a remarkable time of 1:28.267, solidifying his position at the top of the leaderboard under the illuminated conditions of the Corniche circuit. His teammate, Oscar Piastri, was right behind, just 0.163 seconds slower.
In a contrasting turn of events, Yuki Tsunoda experienced a setback as he crashed his Red Bull during the session. Despite this mishap, Max Verstappen managed to secure the third-fastest lap, clocking in at 1:28.547, which placed him 0.280 seconds off Norris’s pace. This session showcased the fierce competition among the teams and the unpredictable nature of this year’s race weekend.
The respective pair of practice sessions could not have been different, as the first one witnessed a surprise pace-setter in Pierre Gasly. He set a time of 1:29.239 seconds while driving for Alpine, narrowly edging out Norris by just 0.007 seconds. Gasly produced a stunning lap during the opening session. The intense late-afternoon sunshine on the shores of the Red Sea didn’t make the task any easier. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc was impressive, placing third in that practice.
As the teams prepare for Saturday’s qualifying and Sunday’s race, they anticipate different conditions compared to those experienced in the first practice. The second session was a night session. This schedule allowed drivers to familiarize themselves with the unique characteristics of the night race circuit, celebrated for its high-speed nature and technical difficulties.
Norris’s extraordinary forms continues to drive his time title campaign forces forward. He now has a razor-thin advantage over Piastri, with only three points between the two drivers. The battle is still hot, as teams are more worried about perfecting their game plans going into qualifying.
