The beloved BBC One drama “Call the Midwife” is set to expand with the announcement of a new film and a prequel series. Heidi Thomas will serve as writer, showrunner, and executive producer on the projects. She’ll join executive producers Dame Pippa Harris and Ann Tricklebank in working to develop the scheme. Production on the show’s now 15th series has only just started! Fans can expect an action-packed two-part Christmas special, in which the characters go on a mercy mission to Hong Kong.
Heidi Thomas expressed her enthusiasm for the upcoming projects, stating, “I have never run out of stories for our midwives, but I have found myself yearning to explore the deeper past.” The new prequel series aims to provide a glimpse into life in Poplar, East London, during the Blitz years, a period that Thomas describes as “extraordinary – filled with loss, togetherness, courage and joy.”

What will await them are adventures beyond imagining in an enigmatic foreign land, all against the backdrop of 1972. According to Thomas, this journey will allow them to “take a short break from Poplar and test themselves in an unfamiliar landscape.”
As Dame Pippa Harris pointed out it’s hugely important that both projects go ahead, currently pushed along mostly due to the inexplicable fact that they are. She and Ann Tricklebank will oversee the production of series 16 of “Call the Midwife,” ensuring that the heartwarming narrative continues to resonate with audiences.
“Call the Midwife” takes its inspiration from the autobiographies of Jennifer Worth, a midwife who served the East End community. Since its premiere, the series has won the affection of audiences with its heartfelt storytelling and rich ensemble. The show chronicles the lives of nurse midwives in London’s East End from the late 1950s to the early 1970s. With the introduction of a prequel series and film it’s a thrilling continuation of the colorful storytelling we’ve enjoyed on the show itself.
Heidi Thomas teased that the prequel series will include “some familiar (if much younger) faces.” This new promise is bound to make long-time fans rejoice!
