At least 11 people have fallen ill and one person has died as a result of consuming contaminated meat products sold nationwide. The USDA has issued a recall for approximately 72,240 pounds of pork, poultry, and beef products produced by Yu Shang company before October 28, 2024. These products, identified by the establishment number "P-46684" or "EST. P-46684," have been tainted with the dangerous bacterium Listeria monocytogenes.
The recall encompasses 26 different items, including various meat and poultry products, which were distributed across the country and may still be present in homes. Consumers are urged to check their refrigerators and freezers for these items. If any of the recalled products are found, they should be discarded immediately or returned to the place of purchase to prevent further risk of illness.
Listeriosis, the disease caused by Listeria monocytogenes, can manifest symptoms just hours after consumption or take up to three months to develop in more severe cases. Vulnerable groups such as children, pregnant women, seniors over 65, and individuals with weakened immune systems are at heightened risk. The outbreak has led to nine hospitalizations among the documented illnesses in California, Illinois, New Jersey, and New York.
Consumers who suspect they have purchased the recalled products can seek guidance by contacting Ling Li, the Plant Manager at Yu Shang Food, Inc., at 864-310-6313. Alternatively, the USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline is available at 888-MPHotline for further assistance.
