Naomi Girma Shatters Records with Historic Chelsea Transfer

Naomi Girma
has signed with Chelsea for a record-breaking transfer fee, making history in women’s soccer. The $1.1 million deal surpasses the previous record of $767,600, setting a new standard in the sport. Girma becomes the first female player to break the $1 million mark, leaving her contract with the NWSL’s San Diego Wave, which was set to run until 2026. Girma, who has earned 44 caps and scored twice for her country, debuted for the USWNT in 2022 and has quickly risen to prominence.

Girma's move to Chelsea is a significant milestone in her career, reflecting her impressive achievements and potential. In 2023, she was honored as U.S. Soccer Women's Player of the Year, and she played a pivotal role in leading the USWNT to gold at the Paris Olympics last summer. Her journey began when she was selected as the No. 1 pick in the 2022 NWSL Draft, showcasing her exceptional talent early on.

Chelsea, currently leading the Women's Super League (WSL) table by nine points, unveiled Girma on the pitch at Stamford Bridge ahead of their victory over Arsenal on Sunday. The transfer aligns with Girma's ambitions, as she had expressed a preference for joining the London-based club. Her desire to play in Europe was supported by San Diego Wave's ownership and her manager Cami.

"There are a lot of things about Chelsea that made me want to come here — the culture, the winning mentality, staff and players. It's a top environment to learn and grow in. Right now, that's what I'm looking to do. It was an easy choice for me." – Girma

Girma's arrival at Chelsea has been met with high praise from former Chelsea manager and reigning USWNT coach Emma Hayes, who described her as "the best defender I've ever seen." Hayes emphasized Girma's unparalleled skills in defense, underscoring her contribution to both club and country.

"The best defender I've ever seen. Ever. I've never seen a player as good as her in the back." – Emma Hayes

Girma expressed her excitement about joining Chelsea and acknowledged the significance of her transfer.

"I'm so happy and really excited to be here. It doesn't feel real," – Girma

Despite leaving San Diego Wave, Girma remains appreciative of her time with the team.

"San Diego Wave has been such an important part of my journey," – Girma
