A minor earthquake measuring 2.8 in magnitude shook the Richmond, Virginia area on a Tuesday afternoon, leaving residents startled but unharmed. The seismic event struck approximately six miles northwest of Glen Allen and 13 miles northwest of Richmond. While the earthquake's tremors were felt by hundreds across Richmond and Henrico County, no immediate reports of damage or injuries have surfaced.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the quake occurred at a depth of about seven miles beneath the Earth's surface. Residents experienced light to moderate shaking, which was reported as far southwest as Blacksburg and as far northwest as Harrisonburg. Despite the widespread sensation of the tremor, the impact remained minimal.
Local news outlet WTVR, a CBS affiliate in Richmond, also confirmed the earthquake's occurrence. The epicenter's proximity to populated areas contributed to its noticeable effect, despite its relatively low magnitude. The tremor served as a reminder of the area's geological activity, even though such occurrences are infrequent.
While the earthquake did not cause any apparent harm or structural damage, it highlighted the preparedness and responsiveness of local authorities and residents. Emergency services remained on alert to ensure public safety and address any potential aftermath.
