Meta has invested heavily in teams of contract human moderators to review content, a practice that reflects a broader industry trend since the 2010s. Companies have increasingly relied on these moderators to manage content effectively. Michael Calore, who was once an active Reddit user, noted that the moderation industry has changed significantly over the years. He reflects on how platforms like Reddit and Wikipedia have struggled with content moderation issues. Despite the presence of volunteer editors and a structured fact-checking process on Wikipedia, challenges persist.
Lauren Goode, a tech journalist, believes that Meta's recent shift in content moderation strategy aims to ingratiate itself with the Trump administration. She argues that the company's decision to restrict certain discussions places it out of step with modern discourse. Goode suggests that the way people consume information has fundamentally shifted over the past 15 years, and society has yet to determine the next online social experience. She emphasizes that Community Notes, a feature intended to enhance fact-checking, is not functioning effectively on X, a platform owned by Elon Musk.
Zoë Schiffer has also been examining the topic of fact-checking from a positive perspective. She believes that Community Notes could work, but faces challenges on X due to Musk's influence. Schiffer asserts that the feature is "easily gamified" and may be politically motivated at times. She highlights the importance of fixing content moderation, stating, "We need to fix content moderation. That is the job."
Mark Zuckerberg's approach to content moderation and platform management has been scrutinized over time. Critics argue that he has used his position opportunistically, particularly in fostering relationships with influential political figures. In a statement, Zuckerberg expressed frustration with regulatory challenges faced by American tech companies in Europe, saying:
