Medicare’s Bold Move to Lower Drug Costs Faces Uncertainty

Medicare
has embarked on a new initiative to negotiate prices for prescription drugs in an effort that began last August. This initiative, enabled by the Inflation Reduction Act, involves direct negotiations between the government and drugmakers for 15 selected medicines, including notable weight loss drugs such as Ozempic, Rybelsus, and Wegovy. While Medicare does not cover these drugs solely for weight loss purposes, it does provide coverage for Ozempic for individuals with diabetes and for Wegovy in cases involving heart problems and obesity.

The Biden administration announced on January 17, 2025, the inclusion of these drugs in the negotiation process. However, the responsibility for carrying out these negotiations will fall to the incoming Trump administration. It remains uncertain whether the new president will support this price negotiation initiative. If successful, reduced prices for the initial set of 10 drugs are expected to commence in 2026, with new prices taking effect in 2027.

The primary aim of these negotiations is to alleviate the financial burden on seniors by making essential medications more affordable. The issue of affordability is significant, as private insurance companies may not cover the cost of weight loss drugs, potentially leaving consumers to pay thousands of dollars annually out of pocket.

“Some folks have to skip a dose in their prescription so they can make a prescription last longer.”

  • HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra

Ozempic and Wegovy are manufactured by Novo Nordisk, which has expressed opposition to the pricing negotiations. This sets the stage for potential conflicts as the government seeks to reduce drug costs while pharmaceutical companies strive to protect their interests.
