As potential federal budget cuts loom, Medicaid, a crucial lifeline for millions of Americans, faces heightened scrutiny. This government program, which serves as a safety net for the nation's most vulnerable populations, covers more than 70 million people—or roughly one in five citizens. Medicaid's extensive reach includes nearly half of America's children, a quarter of rural residents under age 65, and one in 10 children of active-duty service members who rely on it alongside military-sponsored health care.
Medicaid's impact extends beyond mere numbers; it plays a vital role in various aspects of healthcare. It is the largest provider of long-term care services and supports, covering approximately 6 million individuals for such needs. The program also insures nearly half of children with special needs and covered about four in ten births in 2021. However, as federal budget discussions continue, long-term care coverage is among the services at risk.
The importance of Medicaid is particularly pronounced in rural areas. With many residents working in jobs that do not offer comprehensive health insurance, roughly a quarter of these individuals depend on Medicaid for their healthcare needs. Additionally, family premiums for employer-sponsored health insurance averaged more than $22,000 a year in 2022, making Medicaid an essential alternative for affordable coverage.
“The majority of people in the United States have been personally touched by Medicaid. And the reality is that even if they haven't yet, they may be in the future,” said Joan Alker, executive director of Georgetown University's Center for Children and Families.
The significance of Medicaid is underscored by the financial burden it alleviates for long-term care services. The average cost for a semi-private room in a nursing home was $104,025 annually, while home health aid costs exceeded $75,000 in 2023. These figures highlight the critical role Medicaid plays in providing necessary support to those who cannot afford such expenses otherwise.
Furthermore, Medicaid's reach touches nearly every American family, with about 60% of adults either having used the program themselves or knowing someone who has. This widespread reliance emphasizes the potential impact that federal cuts could have on millions of lives.
"Cuts to Medicaid won't just harm my family and won't just harm our communities in the present," said Janae Stevenson, who now works in advocacy at the National Domestic Workers Alliance.
Medicaid's role in supporting children's health cannot be overstated. Nearly half of all children receive medical coverage through the program, making it an indispensable component of pediatric healthcare across the nation. This coverage is especially vital for children with special needs, who often require additional medical attention and resources.
The program also plays a crucial role in supporting military families. One in 10 children of active-duty service members benefit from Medicaid coverage alongside military-sponsored healthcare. This dual coverage ensures that these families have access to the comprehensive care necessary to address their unique challenges.
Medicaid's significance extends to rural America, where people are more likely to work in positions without comprehensive healthcare benefits. In these areas, the program provides essential coverage to individuals who might otherwise go without necessary medical services.
