McLaren Unveils Futuristic MCL39 with Striking Camo Livery

McLaren has taken pole position as the first Formula 1 team to reveal its 2025 car, the MCL39, ahead of the upcoming season. The renowned team showcased their innovative vehicle at Silverstone, featuring a unique geometric camo design in shades of papaya and black. This one-off livery is a prelude to the season-long race livery, which will be revealed at Formula 1's main launch event in London on February 18.

The MCL39 marks a significant leap in McLaren's pursuit of performance excellence. The team focused heavily on enhancing downforce and aerodynamic efficiency during the car's development. These improvements follow McLaren's triumphant 2024 season, where they clinched their first Constructors' Championship in 26 years. The team adopted a challenging approach over the winter to ensure that the MCL39 would build upon the success of its predecessor, the championship-winning MCL38.

In a strategic move, McLaren utilized a promotional filming day at Silverstone to put the first miles on the new car before official testing begins in Bahrain from February 26 to February 28. The first race of the season is set to take place in Australia on March 16.

"We must be realistic that every team will have made progress over the winter. Last year highlighted just how much the grid has closed up, which is a brilliant thing for the sport." – Zak Brown

Zak Brown, McLaren's CEO, emphasized the competitive nature of Formula 1 and acknowledged the progress other teams are likely to have made during the off-season. Despite this, he remains optimistic about McLaren's advancements.

"We believe we have made further steps forward since the championship-winning MCL38 but we won't know where we sit in the standings until we get into qualifying in Australia." – Zak Brown

The MCL39's design reflects McLaren's commitment to pushing boundaries in F1 innovation. Significant changes were made to achieve higher downforce and aerodynamic efficiency, raising the bar in various technical aspects. Andrea Stella, McLaren's Team Principal, expressed confidence in the car's performance as it debuted at Silverstone.

"The car we see today [on track] for this promotional event is pretty substantially the one we will see during the Bahrain test," – Stella

"Downforce and aero efficiency is by far the most important target that you have — which is what we tried to achieve with this new car, which is innovative. It is a car which we tried to raise the bar in many areas, including the fundamental layout." – Stella

McLaren's drivers, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, are poised for another competitive season following their impressive performances last year. Norris secured second place in the drivers' championship behind Red Bull's Max Verstappen, contributing four victories to McLaren's successful campaign. Piastri also demonstrated his prowess with two wins.

While McLaren has made substantial progress, Zak Brown remains cautious about predicting their position relative to other teams until qualifying in Australia reveals the true pecking order.

"The guys have done a very good job to try and explore more areas and push boundaries. So you're always a little bit nervous that things are not going to be perfect when you try them, and how well they're going to match the track and wind tunnel and all these things put together." – Zak Brown

"But I think everything's working as it should, and everything feels normal. Just with the conditions, things change quite quickly." – Zak Brown
