Nico Harrison, general manager of the Dallas Mavericks, was the latest to be caught off guard. He was impressed at the sincere dedication that Mavericks fans have for young star player Luka Doncic. In a candid discussion, he acknowledged that he underestimated the emotional connection between Doncic and the fan base, admitting, “I did know that Luka was important to the fan base, but I didn’t quite know it to what level.”
The Mavericks began encountering significant issues almost immediately after sending Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers. In exchange, they got Anthony Davis, which created a world of debate. This decision caused wide concern around the league, particularly as it soured the Mavericks’ once-promising roster into something deeply uncomfortable. In fact, the team did not meet the NBA’s required minimum of eight players in several games while Davis was out.
Harrison reiterated the significance of health for Dallas if they want to reclaim their place among the league’s contenders. “Honestly, we just got to get healthy,” he said, pointing out the need for a complete, competitive roster. The team has faced further setbacks, as star player Kyrie Irving recently tore the ACL in his left knee, compounding their difficulties.
Though it is discouraging that these problems persist, Harrison is feeling good about the Mavericks’ outlook. He anticipates that the team will secure a solid player in the upcoming draft, where they are currently slated to pick 11th. He thinks a productive draft will put the finishing touches on a budding roster. If adopted, this change would open up the possibility of a much more competitive season.
Harrison further braced himself for the anticipated outrage from fans over the trade. “I expected plenty of blowback from the trade,” he commented, suggesting that such decisions are often met with mixed reactions from stakeholders. He noted that had Davis been able to play alongside Irving, Klay Thompson, P.J. Washington, and Dereck Lively II for the remainder of the season, it might have alleviated some of the criticism.
During his tenure, defensive stalwart Harrison made clear how much he valued defense by stating, “Defense wins championships.” He has a commitment to improving this aspect of the team’s game as they move forward.
The Mavericks recently faced a tough loss against Memphis after a previous victory at Sacramento, which had offered them a shot at claiming the eighth seed in the playoffs. Ultimately, Harrison remains focused on moving forward with the current roster, stating, “I’ve actually never spoken ill of Luka, and I’m just ready to move on with this team that we have.”
