Mason Greenwood, the 23-year-old footballer, has officially decided to switch his international allegiance from England to Jamaica, as confirmed by the Football Association. Greenwood initially left Manchester United on loan for Getafe, where he scored 10 goals in 36 appearances. Following a successful season at Getafe, he moved to Marseille, where he has netted an impressive 15 goals in 24 Ligue 1 matches. This remarkable performance has linked him with a potential summer transfer to Paris Saint-Germain.
Greenwood's decision to represent Jamaica comes after a turbulent period in his career. He was suspended three years ago following charges of attempted rape, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and controlling and coercive behavior. Although the charges were later dropped, former England manager Gareth Southgate had downplayed the possibility of Greenwood's recall to the national team. Despite his high-level performances, Greenwood had only been capped once by England in September 2020.
The FA's chief executive, Mark Bullingham, stated:
"I don't think there was ever a request or anything like that. It just wasn't one we got to, so it's a personal decision by him."
Bullingham further clarified the situation by noting:
"No, we actually didn't have that communication."
Greenwood's father was born in Jamaica, which may have influenced his decision to switch allegiances. Thomas Tuchel is set to announce his first England squad on March 14, but Greenwood will not be considered as he finalizes his registration with Jamaica.
