Wearing a mask significantly reduces the incidence of respiratory symptoms, as demonstrated by recent scientific studies. In a groundbreaking randomized clinical trial conducted in Norway, involving 4,647 participants, researchers found that only 8.9% of those who wore masks reported respiratory symptoms. In contrast, 12.2% of those who did not wear masks experienced such symptoms. This study highlights a relative risk reduction of 27% for mask wearers. Meanwhile, a retrospective study in Weifang, China, with 7.8 million residents, suggested that mask use during the pandemic may have shielded the population from pollution and reduced stroke cases by 38.6% over a span of 33 months.
In Japan, mask-wearing has been a prevalent practice, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, a shift in behavior occurred between 2022 and October 2023, as the percentage of the population wearing masks declined from 97% to 63%. A 2024 study estimated that this reduction in mask usage may have resulted in an additional 3,500 deaths, underscoring the protective role masks play against respiratory diseases. Masks have proven to be among the most effective strategies for combating SARS-CoV-2, as supported by several systematic reviews and statistical studies.
Cultural perspectives on mask usage vary significantly. In East Asian countries, masks are commonly embraced and associated with positive health benefits. However, in several Western countries, mask use remains a politically polarizing topic. This divergence in attitudes has been highlighted by mathematical models assessing the impact of universal mask-wearing. A study published in Physical Review E by Richard P. Sear, PhD, from the University of Surrey, Guildford, England, employed data from the UK's COVID-19 app, which covered seven million contacts. The research focused on the correlation between contact duration and infection rates.
The model estimated that if all UK residents had worn masks during every potential exposure to the virus, transmission would have been approximately nine times lower. This significant reduction emphasizes the effectiveness of correctly wearing masks in curbing virus spread. The findings stress that face coverings can act as a crucial barrier against transmissible respiratory infections.
