Mark Carney – as the Liberal Party under Justin Trudeau has won decisively in the most recent Canadian federal election. They won a majority of seats in the House of Commons to form a new government. Preliminary results indicate that the Liberals won 169 seats in a 338-seat house. They are only three seats away from hitting 172, the number needed for a Republican majority. This election will be Carney’s first full term use as prime minister. He entered the position in early March in the wake of Justin Trudeau’s resignation.
So the Liberals and Conservatives were competing heavily in popular vote terms. Each of the three parties received more than 40 per cent of all the ballots counted nationwide. The Conservatives avoided disaster, but took only 144 seats. Their enhanced backing wasn’t enough to rescue Pierre Poilievre through his own die in Carleton, Ontario, with the new Conservative leader losing his own seat. Poilievre’s home town challenge was a wave of 90 opponents, a significant portion of which were indie candidates campaigning specifically for electoral reform.
The election saw the Bloc Québécois winning 22 seats and the New Democratic Party (NDP) suffering a substantial loss of 13 seats based on preliminary counts. The Liberals won big in all the important ridings. In Terrebonne, a Montreal suburb, they lost to the Bloc by only 35 votes. This strategy in Alberta was especially effective for the Conservatives, who won all but three of the 37 seats up for grabs.
British Columbia was an especially competitive province, with the Conservatives winning 19 seats there to the Liberals’ 20. The overall voter turnout was 69%, exceeding participation rates in the last two elections in 2015 and 2019. This record-setting engagement marks a new peak in an upward trend of recent Canadian interest in their evolving electoral processes.
