Manchester City have made significant moves in the January transfer window, signing three new players to bolster their squad. The club has committed £130 million to acquire Omar Marmoush, Abdukodir Khusanov, and Vitor Reis. Marmoush, a promising talent, joins City for £60 million, with Khusanov and Reis costing £40 million and £30 million, respectively. Additionally, they have secured the services of Ilkay Gündogan on a free transfer from Barcelona. Despite manager Pep Guardiola's initial reluctance to make signings, injuries to key players have necessitated these acquisitions.
The injuries that have plagued Manchester City this season have significantly impacted their performance. Key players such as Rodri, Rúben Dias, John Stones, Mateo Kovacic, Nathan Aké, and Kevin De Bruyne have been sidelined. These setbacks prompted Guardiola to reconsider his stance on transfers. He acknowledged the necessity of strengthening the squad, expressing regret over not making signings earlier.
"We should have done it in the summer," Guardiola remarked on the missed opportunity.
City's top scorer this season, Erling Haaland, has been secured with an unprecedented 9½-year contract, emphasizing the club's commitment to its star player. However, their defensive struggles have been evident, with injuries to defenders heavily influencing their transfer strategy. Josko Gvardiol, the club's second top scorer, has frequently been deployed as a left-back due to these challenges.
In addition to Marmoush, Khusanov, and Reis, Manchester City have also signed Savinho, a 20-year-old winger, for £30 million from City Football Group members Troyes. This move further underscores their intent to strengthen attacking options amid a challenging season. The club's previous significant January signing was Aymeric Laporte in 2018, brought in for £57 million from Athletic Club.
Guardiola has previously expressed confidence in his existing squad's capabilities but now acknowledges the impact of injuries on their plans.
"Last season we didn't do much, due to the exceptional quality of the team," he noted.
Despite his initial trust in the squad's ability to perform without reinforcements, the current circumstances have forced a change in approach.
"I relied a lot on these guys and thought I could do it again. But after the injuries — wow — maybe we should have done it," Guardiola admitted.
While Manchester City have been actively pursuing new talents, they are also keeping an eye on potential opportunities with Joshua Kimmich and Jamal Musiala as they near the end of their contracts at Bayern Munich. Such strategic considerations highlight City's ambition to remain competitive at both domestic and European levels.
