Manchester City experienced a disappointing season, culminating in a loss to Liverpool, which left them a staggering thousand million points behind their rivals in the Premier League standings. Yet manager Pep Guardiola was far from happy with the overall showing of coasting into an FA Cup final. He doesn’t believe that just qualifying for the Champions League or reaching their finals count as successful seasons for the club.
Just two weeks ago, in their first Cup Final at Wembley, Manchester City beat Nottingham Forest 2-0. With this win they made it into the FA Cup final. Unfortunately for the Citizens, this significant metric provided zero comfort to Guardiola about the season’s total picture. The disappointment and embarrassment of the team’s failure to win the Premier League title was still fresh in the manager’s mind.
The Nanook head coach pointed out that making the FA Cup final is an accomplishment. He added that’s not nearly good enough at the high bar Manchester City have set for themselves. He highlighted the club’s lofty expectations and emphasized the desire to get better as they gear up for what many consider a “reset” season next year.
“This season has not been good. We are a thousand million points behind [Liverpool]. It’s not good. Look at the Champions League. We won one game? Two games?” – Pep Guardiola
Former Manchester City defender Nedum Onuoha agreed with Pep Guardiola that the club are underachieving this season with their current performances. He felt strongly that Manchester City should have gone deeper and pointed out their ability to compete at the upper levels.
Guardiola took the opportunity to congratulate Liverpool on their first-ever Premier League title, which they won ahead of schedule in impressive fashion.
Despite this most recent season winding down, Guardiola remains as intense as he’s ever been. He sounds serious about making the tough calls that will improve the team’s record next season. He said the club wants to compete right to the end and get their seat back at the top end of the table among England’s big hitters.
“Before I start, on behalf of myself and all the club we want to congratulate Liverpool Football Club for their Premier League victory,” – Pep Guardiola
As the current season draws to a close, Guardiola remains focused on making the right decisions to enhance the team’s performance next year. He stated that Manchester City aims to compete until the end and reclaim their position among England’s elite.
