Mac Jones, the former Alabama star and New England Patriots first-round pick, has agreed to a two-year contract with the San Francisco 49ers. The deal is reportedly worth $7 million, with $5 million guaranteed. This move comes as Jones seeks new opportunities to develop his career under the guidance of coach Kyle Shanahan.
Jones was selected by the Patriots as the 15th pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. In his rookie season, he showed promise by leading the team to a 10-7 record and a playoff berth. He also made the Pro Bowl as an alternate, throwing for 3,801 yards and 22 touchdowns. However, he struggled to maintain this success in subsequent seasons.
During his first season with the Patriots, Jones started 14 games, achieving a 6-8 record. He completed 288 of 442 passes for 2,997 yards, with 14 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. Despite these achievements, he was unable to consistently replicate his initial success.
In his latest stint with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Jones appeared in 10 games and started seven in place of an injured Trevor Lawrence. The Jaguars managed only a 2-5 record in his starts, with an average of just 15 points per game. He completed 65.3% of his passes for 1,672 yards, alongside eight touchdowns and eight interceptions.
Jones's performance in training camp was noteworthy as he managed to beat out C.J. Beathard to become Trevor Lawrence's backup. However, seeking further growth opportunities, he has now turned his focus to the San Francisco 49ers.
