Louis DeJoy Announces Departure from USPS, Seeks Successor

Louis DeJoy, who has led the United States Postal Service (USPS) through significant transformation, announced his decision to step down as Postmaster General. Appointed in 2020 during the Trump administration, DeJoy has overseen a critical period for the USPS, marked by ambitious modernization efforts. On Tuesday, he formally requested the Postal Service Board of Governors to begin the search for his successor, as confirmed by a news release from the Board.

DeJoy brought over 35 years of experience in logistics to his role at the USPS. He spearheaded the "Delivering for America" plan, a comprehensive 10-year strategy unveiled in March 2021 to modernize USPS operations. This plan aims to invest over $40 billion in the next decade to revamp the agency's infrastructure. Specifically, $20 billion is allocated for enhancing the mail and package processing network, $19 billion for upgrading the retail and delivery network, and $2 billion for technology improvements.

"As you know, I have worked tirelessly to lead the 640,000 men and women of the Postal Service in accomplishing an extraordinary transformation," – Louis DeJoy

Under DeJoy's leadership, the USPS navigated unprecedented challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic, economic inflation, and a highly charged political climate. Despite these hurdles, DeJoy focused on ensuring the USPS continued to serve the American public effectively.

"We have served the American people through an unprecedented pandemic and through a period of high inflation and sensationalized politics." – Louis DeJoy

In his letter to the Board of Governors, DeJoy emphasized his commitment to ensuring a smooth transition for his successor. He expressed his intention to support this process diligently to minimize disruption to postal services and position the USPS for long-term success.

"Today I am requesting that you begin the process of identifying a successor for my position as Postmaster General," – Louis DeJoy

"While you undertake that process, my commitment is to devote my time and energy and being as helpful as possible in facilitating a transition that is the least impactful to the Postal Service and the American people, and that positions my successor and the Postal Service for long-term success." – Louis DeJoy

The Board of Governors acknowledged DeJoy's contributions and leadership over the past five years. They commended his efforts to modernize USPS operations and expressed gratitude for his service. The Board will oversee the selection of DeJoy's successor, ensuring continuity in leadership and furthering the goals set forth in the "Delivering for America" plan.
