Liverpool's manager, Arne Slot, has expressed dissatisfaction with Darwin Núñez's recent performances on the field. The 25-year-old Uruguay international found himself on the bench during Liverpool's 2-0 victory over Manchester City, a decision prompted by Slot's concerns over Núñez's effort in previous matches. Despite being a fan favorite for his usual energetic play, Núñez's recent lack of work rate against Wolves and Aston Villa has drawn criticism from Slot, who believes Núñez was not giving his best.
Slot's concerns were particularly evident following Liverpool's 2-2 draw with Aston Villa. During the match, Núñez missed a prime opportunity to score, visibly displaying his frustration. Slot addressed this incident, stating:
"I helped him by saying you can miss a chance [against Villa]."
However, it was not just the missed opportunity that troubled Slot. He highlighted Núñez's lack of effort as a recurring issue, noting similar shortcomings in the match against Wolves. Slot candidly remarked:
"I wasn't only hard on him. But for the second time in a row I wasn't happy with his work effort, against Wolves and against Villa."
Slot emphasized that while mistakes can happen, consistent underperformance is unacceptable. He elaborated on his stance by saying:
"I can't accept if a player doesn't give everything. That is clear. I can accept it once but twice was a bit too much. That's why I addressed it."
Despite these criticisms, Slot acknowledged Núñez's dedication during training sessions. On Monday, ahead of Liverpool's upcoming fixture against Newcastle, Núñez impressed with his commitment and work rate. Slot commended this improvement:
"Yesterday [Monday] he was incredible in the training session when it comes to work rate."
As Liverpool prepares to face Newcastle on Wednesday, all eyes will be on whether Núñez can translate his training ground efforts into matchday performances. His ability to bounce back will be crucial not only for his standing within the team but also for maintaining the support of Liverpool's passionate fanbase.
