A court in India has sentenced Sanjay Roy, a hospital volunteer, to life in prison for the rape and murder of a 31-year-old junior doctor. The heinous crime, which took place at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, ignited widespread outrage and protests throughout the country. Despite the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) demanding the death penalty, the judge opted for life imprisonment for Roy, who was apprehended just a day after the crime.
The victim's tragic death has led to a series of protests, with dozens of doctors expressing their dissatisfaction with the investigation and subsequent sentencing. Many healthcare professionals participated in strikes lasting several weeks, demanding accountability from both the accused and officials allegedly complicit in delaying or derailing the investigation. The victim's family, represented by her father, also voiced dissatisfaction with the court's decision, underscoring a broader concern about the safety of healthcare workers in India, particularly women.
Indian law prohibits revealing the identities of victims of sexual violence and their families, ensuring the privacy of those involved. Nevertheless, the public outcry continues as Roy, maintaining his innocence, prepares to appeal against the verdict in a higher court. In his defense, Roy alleged the involvement of unnamed others in the crime, an assertion that remains unsubstantiated.
Despite the severity of the crime, the judge chose not to impose the death penalty—an outcome that has not sat well with many. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her dissatisfaction with the court's ruling.

The incident has heightened concerns over the safety of healthcare professionals within India. The situation has also shed light on systemic issues within the investigative and judicial processes that many believe require urgent reform.
