Rick Buckler, acclaimed drummer of the iconic band The Jam, has passed away at the age of 69. Buckler died peacefully on Monday evening in Woking after a short illness, surrounded by his family. Known for his innovative drum patterns, Buckler's contribution to the band's success was immeasurable. His passing has left a significant void in the music world, with former bandmates and colleagues expressing deep sorrow.
The Jam, a band that rose to fame during the punk and new wave era of the late 1970s, achieved remarkable success with 18 consecutive UK top 40 singles between 1977 and 1982. Among their hits, songs like "Going Underground" and "A Town Called Malice" reached number one on the charts. Buckler's drumming played a pivotal role in shaping these songs, earning him praise as both a talented musician and a good-natured individual.
Bandmates Paul Weller and Bruce Foxton have both expressed their grief. Weller, The Jam's lead singer, reflected on their early days together:
"I'm shocked and saddened by Rick's passing," said Paul Weller. "I'm thinking back to us all rehearsing in my bedroom in Stanley Road, Woking. To all the pubs and clubs we played at as kids, to eventually making a record. What a journey!"
Foxton, the band's bass player, shared his own tribute:
"I was shocked and devastated to hear the very sad news today. Rick was a good guy and a great drummer whose innovative drum patterns helped shape our songs," stated Bruce Foxton.
In addition to his work with The Jam, Buckler was also a member of the successor band From the Jam, alongside Foxton. Their collaboration continued to captivate audiences with the energetic performances that had become synonymous with The Jam's legacy.
Rhoda Dakar, lead singer of The Bodysnatchers, also paid tribute to Buckler:
"A band is only as good as its drummer," remarked Dakar. "So I would say he was a bloody good one."
Buckler had recently been forced to cancel a spoken-word tour due to health problems, which left fans concerned about his well-being. Despite this setback, his legacy in music remains intact, inspiring countless musicians and fans alike.
"My sincere condolences to his family and friends. Don't waste a day people – tomorrow isn't promised," Dakar added.
