King Charles III is embarking on a unique approach to celebrate Commonwealth Day by launching a personal playlist, titled "The King's Music Room," that promises to lift spirits and evoke cherished memories. This innovative project, developed in partnership with Apple Music, will be unveiled on Monday. The playlist will feature a diverse array of musical selections, including tracks from Bob Marley, Kylie Minogue, and Grace Jones, among others.
King Charles has expressed a longstanding admiration for Bob Marley, even visiting the reggae legend's former home in Jamaica, now a museum. The playlist reflects the King's eclectic musical tastes throughout his life, spanning genres from 1930s crooners to modern Afrobeat stars. Nigerian-American artist Davido and British singer-songwriter Raye are among those expected to contribute.
In the lead-up to the launch, a video trailer released showcases the band for the changing of the guard outside Buckingham Palace performing Marley's classic hit "Could You Be Loved." The King himself appears in the video, emphasizing the profound impact music holds in his life.
"Throughout my life, music has meant a great deal to me," King Charles states in the video.
He further elaborates on the significance of music, saying it has the power to evoke joyful memories, offer comfort during difficult times, and transport us to distant places.
"It has that remarkable ability to bring happy memories flooding back from the deepest recesses of our memory, to comfort us in times of sadness, and to take us to distant places."
The project also features a photograph of King Charles at Buckingham Palace, portraying him as a royal DJ with an "on air" sign prominently displayed.
"So this is what I particularly wanted to share – songs which have brought me joy," he adds.
The King's Music Room not only showcases his personal musical journey but also reflects his intention to connect with the Commonwealth through this creative endeavor.
"This seemed such an interesting and innovative way to celebrate this year's Commonwealth Day," King Charles remarks.
The choice of tracks will be officially published on Commonwealth Day, offering listeners a glimpse into the musical influences that have shaped the King's life. This project underscores King Charles's commitment to engaging with modern audiences while honoring tradition.
