Karmelo Anthony, then 16, was charged with one count of first degree murder for the killing of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf. His bond had been lowered from $1 million to $250,000, allowing him to be released from jail on April 14. The case stems from a double stabbing on April 2. Despite these shortcomings, it has gained national attention and lit a fire under the Flint community to engage in crucial discourse around race and justice.
Once released, Karmelo Anthony is required to report to court bailiffs every Friday. He must be accompanied and monitored by a parent or adult caregiver at all times. Furthermore, he is not allowed to contact the victim’s family under the terms required by the court.
Fundraising Efforts and Community Support
To help Karmelo Anthony with his legal defense costs, his family set up a fundraising campaign on the Christian-oriented GiveSendGo platform. At time of writing, as of April 15, they have raised more than $431,000 of their $500,000 goal. This unique, local fundraising campaign has inspired a huge wave of contributions since, raising almost $530,000 in donations so far.
Along with the financial support, Karmelo Anthony’s family has received severe backlash, including radical racist threats and bigotry ever since the incident. Minister Dominique Alexander, who directs the north Texas-based Next Generation Action Network, a civil rights organization in that mold. He became an outspoken advocate, relentlessly advocating for justice for the Anthony family. He shone a light on the personal toll it has taken on them during the ongoing firestorm of the case.
“Their personal address has been exposed,” – Minister Dominique Alexander.
The normally reticent civil rights organization has previously raised alarms about the process, calling it fundamentally unfair in the mostly anonymous legal proceedings to date. Alexander brought to life the moral imperative for justice that is blind, which means not only impartial but free from racist stereotypes and prejudices. He proclaimed, “This justice needs to be blind and shielded from prejudices. We don’t play the race card. We live it.”
Legal Representation and Family Statements
Karmelo Anthony’s lawyer, Mike Howard, defended his client during a bond hearing where he detailed Karmelo’s background. Howard continued that Karmelo has no prior trouble, does not even own a passport. He argued that the story being told in the press about the case has been distorted.
“The narrative being spread is false, unjust, and harmful,” – Anthony’s family (via GiveSendGo fundraiser description).
Howard admitted the investigation was complicated. He noted that both sides are committed to ensuring an open and transparent process. He stressed, “The police and prosecution want what’s right, they want to get it right. They want to do a complete, fair, and accurate investigation the same way that we do.”
As Karmelo continues to recover at home, Howard, in an email exchange with theSurge, opened up about how the family has coped with this traumatic experience.
“Karmelo and the entire Anthony family look forward to some quiet time together,” – Mike Howard.
He further requested understanding from the public: “They ask for space and time for the full investigation by both sides to play out fairly.”
Community Reactions
While this inspired the community to mourn, protest and demand justice, there was an impulse to respond with violence. Many friends, former teammates and fans are rallying around Karmelo Anthony and his family. At the same time, others who should know better are vocalizing outrage due to the salacious nature of the charges.
The Next Generation Action Network stands firmly with the Anthony family, advocating for justice that goes beyond racial prejudices. The decision making process Ajusto is proud to represent the interests of those who deserve to be protected, unarmed, innocent people.
This is an incredibly difficult time in life for Karmelo Anthony. What his family can still control, they’ve placed in the hands of faith in God and their supportive community.
