Jonathan Bailey’s Electrifying Take on Richard II Captivates Audiences

Jonathan Bailey has returned to the stage with a gripping performance in a modern adaptation of Shakespeare's Richard II at the Bridge Theatre in London. His portrayal of the troubled monarch has garnered praise from critics and captivated audiences, notably drawing a new wave of young theatre-goers. Directed by Nicholas Hytner, the production presents Richard II as a camp, cocaine-snorting king, a character that Bailey has infused with inspiration from HBO's Succession.

Bailey, a seasoned Shakespearean actor, has received accolades for his dynamic portrayal. The Guardian's review awarded the performance three stars, noting that Bailey's "words glitter with feeling" and that he "singularly shines, his luminosity putting the others slightly in the shade." The Evening Standard also praised his performance, stating that Bailey "commands the stage and even allows a little camp to seep into the character." The Independent hailed his portrayal with a four-star review, describing it as having "an infectious spirit of camp naughtiness."

The production itself is a contemporary take on the classic play, with Bailey's Richard II characterized by a mix of regal authority and playful irreverence. The Times commended Bailey's "stateliness personified" depiction of the Duke of York, emphasizing his ability to capture the essence of royalty. This unique interpretation has resonated with audiences, particularly young women who have been inspired to explore Shakespeare's works for the first time.

Bailey's decision to take on the complex role was driven by the opportunity to delve into the character's multifaceted nature. He stated, "It's a feast of a play and really speaks to our times – it's fascinating to explore a king who has a cast iron right to rule." This exploration has been complemented by comparisons to acclaimed actors like Ben Whishaw and David Tennant, though some critics suggest Bailey's performance does not quite reach their level.

Before taking on Richard II, Bailey built an impressive theatrical resume. He played Cassio in Hytner's Othello at the National Theatre in 2013 and performed alongside Ian McKellen in King Lear. Additionally, his experience in portraying regal figures extends beyond Shakespeare, having played Anthony in Bridgerton and Fiyero in Wicked.
