Ayers' mother, Ruby, was a school teacher and piano instructor, while his father, Roy Sr., balanced roles as a parking attendant and trombonist. It was perhaps inevitable that young Roy would find his calling in music. He began playing the piano at just five years old and soon explored a range of instruments. His early exposure to music was further solidified when he attended a Lionel Hampton Big Band concert at the age of five, leaving a lasting impression on him.

During his school years at Jefferson High School, Ayers formed his first group known as the Jefferson Combo. This venture marked the beginning of his journey into professional musicianship, which officially started in 1961. His pursuit of musical excellence led him to delve into advanced music theory at college.

Ayers' career reached new heights with the formation of his group, Roy Ayers Ubiquity. In 1976, they released the hit track "Everybody Loves the Sunshine," which became his most celebrated work. The mellow tune not only resonated with audiences but also solidified his reputation in the industry. Additionally, Ayers ventured into film music by writing and producing the soundtrack for the blaxploitation film "Coffy," starring Pam Grier.

Throughout the decades, Ayers remained a pioneering figure in nu-soul and jazz funk. His contributions significantly influenced the 90s acid jazz movement, cementing his legacy as an innovator in modern music genres.

"His family ask that you respect their privacy at this time, a celebration of Roy's life will be forthcoming." – Roy Ayers' family
