Indonesia Welcomes Jordi Cruyff as National Team’s Technical Advisor

Indonesia has appointed Jordi Cruyff as the national football team's technical advisor. The nation's football governing body, PSSI, made the announcement on Tuesday, signaling a new chapter in Indonesian football. Cruyff, who served as Barcelona's sporting director from 2021 to 2023, will arrive in Indonesia in March to begin his new role. His appointment comes as Indonesia strives to qualify for the expanded 48-team 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Indonesia is currently third in their group in the third round of the Asian qualifiers, trailing Australia by just one point in the battle for the second automatic qualification spot. With four matches remaining, the team remains optimistic about securing a place in the tournament. Even if they finish third or fourth, they could still reach the 2026 World Cup through additional qualifying rounds and an intercontinental playoff.

In a significant coaching overhaul, Patrick Kluivert has been named head coach, succeeding South Korean Shin Tae-Yong. Kluivert's coaching team includes Dutch assistants Alex Pastoor and Denny Landzaat. This new leadership aims to revitalize the national team's performance and strategy.

PSSI chief Erick Thohir expressed confidence in Cruyff's ability to enhance the team's football philosophy. He highlighted Cruyff's role in providing technical guidance and assisting in the search for a technical director. Thohir's vision aligns with the ambitions of Indonesian fans, who are eager to see their team perform better than their 1938 World Cup debut, where they suffered a 6-0 defeat against Hungary.

"Giving technical input and also developing our football philosophy, including by finding us a technical director," said Erick Thohir.

Cruyff, son of Barcelona legend Johan Cruyff, brings extensive experience to his advisory role. At 51 years old, he is keen to contribute to Indonesia's footballing success and growth on the international stage.

"I can't wait to share my experience and knowledge to further the level of Indonesian soccer," stated Jordi Cruyff.

The appointment of Cruyff is a strategic move by Indonesia as they prepare for the challenges ahead in the Asian qualifiers. With his expertise in developing football strategies and talent management, there is hope that he will significantly impact the team's progress.
