Gregory Guilfoyle, an Indiana man, was sentenced to 100 years in prison. He was convicted previously for the fatal double shooting of his pregnant wife, Hannah Lynch, and Franklin County Sheriff’s Deputy Arin Bowers. The heartbreaking accident took place in the front yard of their home during the intense blizzard of 2022. The court convicted Guilfoyle on other felony charges, including attempted murder.
Hannah Lynch had her head blown off, then was dumped in the snow to freeze to death. The violence of this attack unfortunately resulted in the death of her unborn child. In the midst of the shooting, Guilfoyle was holding their 23-month-old daughter. Sadly at the time she was just wearing a onesie so that brave man carried her through the violent blizzard. The case soon opened a Pandora’s box of horrifying acts of systemic violence. With it came the raw testimony of those who experienced the horrible realities that played out that awful day.
A Night of Violence and Desperation
On one of the coldest nights of 2022, Hannah Lynch never could have imagined her life was about to change forever. As she was sitting in her own front yard, she was shot in the back of the head by Gregory Guilfoyle. The injury left her nearly unconscious — and in danger of drowning in the sea.
While Deputy Arin Bowers was able to get to the scene quickly, he too was shot by Guilfoyle, though he had on a bullet-resistant vest. During the intense back-and-forth shootout, Deputy Bowers found the opportunity to return fire, striking Guilfoyle who ended up needing emergency treatment for his wounds.
Hannah’s Lynch body was found under the snow with a severely damaged gunshot wound. She was rushed by emergency responders to Newtown’s neighboring University of Cincinnati Medical Center, a Level 1 trauma center. There, the devoted medical personnel ceaselessly did the remarkable work of keeping her alive.
Legal Proceedings and Sentencing
Following a three-week trial, the jury returned its verdict. A jury has recently deemed GregoryX Guilfoyle “guilty but mentally ill” on eight felony charges, including attempted murder and aggravated assault. The court looked closely at his PTSD and other mental health diagnoses. These terms were a result of his past occupation as a law enforcement officer.
In court, Hannah Lynch had no qualms about expressing her displeasure. She proclaimed, “I claim my daughter because she is not yours.” Hannah had to deal with severe emotional trauma stemming from the incident. On top of this, she was dealing with years of litigation per her child.
Judson McMillin, Guilfoyle’s attorney, previously said that he plans to appeal the sentencing. He focused a great deal on how his client’s mental health issues were a huge factor in the case. Yet even though the jury’s decision was a legal error, it mirrored the public outrage at intransigent domestic violence and its heartbreaking results.
Family’s Resilience Amidst Tragedy
Hannah Lynch’s mother, Brenda Lynch, was by her daughter’s side the entire ordeal. Brenda described Hannah as an “amazing mother who is incredibly resilient.” She announced, “That monster did not win! Her intense words revealed not only her own strength, but her fierce commitment to Hannah’s healing journey.
Brenda mentioned that her granddaughter is being raised to be strong despite the challenges they face as a family. Gregory Guilfoyle’s actions, in turn, profoundly traumatized Hannah. Though his effect has been nothing short of magical, his magic has nevertheless left deep and traumatizing scars on everyone in her orbit.
