Igloo Products Corp. has dramatically increased the size of its recall. They even recalled an additional 130,000 coolers due to imminent fingertip crushing hazards. This decision comes on the heels of the company’s first recall in February. We saw similar issues across more than one million coolers for the same defect. The corporation’s board of directors voted to grow in spite of 78 injury reports. Of those, 26 cases resulted in serious injuries including fingertip amputation, bone fractures, or laceration.
The recalled products were all produced prior to January 2024. They present an incredibly danger, as they pinch consumers’ fingers in the cooler. Consumers should immediately stop using the affected coolers. They only need to find where it was made, which is stamped in a round circle on the bottom. The face of the date features an angled arrow that points to both the month of manufacture and the last two digits of the year. The recalled models are the LATITUDE 90 QT ROLLER, Model Numbers 34692, 34785 produced from July 2020 to December 2022. MAXCOLD LATITUDE 90 QT ROLLER, model number 34790, manufactured from October 2021 through February 2023.
Igloo’s recall follows nearly a dozen reports, including several incidents that illustrate how these coolers can create life-threatening pinch hazards. The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) highlighted that these products can “pinch consumers’ fingertips against the cooler, posing fingertip amputation and crushing hazards.”
The company is encouraging all customers with these model units to cease operation immediately.
