Even before the recent violence, Gaza was facing the worst humanitarian crisis in the world after suffering an almost 16-year-long blockade. An estimated 1.9 million people are one step away from famine because of the devastation. The food and water availability in the region—which was already stretched thin due to the crisis—is quickly devolving into catastrophe. Now that Israel has agreed to let a small trickle of aid into Gaza, the need for quick distribution becomes even more urgent.
On Tuesday, 93 United Nations aid trucks were allowed into the Gaza Strip after extensive security checks. The supplies included essential items such as flour for bakeries, food for community kitchens, vital medicines, and desperately needed baby formula. Despite these efforts, aid has yet to get through in any significant amounts to the beleaguered territory. As a consequence, many residents are still left hanging in the balance.
The current humanitarian crisis is made worse by the fact that at least 25% of Gaza’s water supply is contaminated and therefore unfit to drink. As a consequence, residents swim with anxiety over both hunger and thirst. The humanitarian catastrophe obviously caused the international community to at first raise an eyebrow. In response, they are putting tremendous pressure on Israel to allow more supplies to come in.
The UK government has moved quickly and boldly to address the situation developing before our eyes. They have paused trade negotiations with Israel, called in the Israeli ambassador, and announced additional sanctions against West Bank settlers. As the crisis continued, US President Donald Trump made his frustration heard. He wrapped up his recent regional tour by saying that “millions of people are starving.”
The U.S. Secretary of State should acknowledge that the assistance given to date has been inadequate. He urged the international community to do more in responding. Even with a ceasefire, the humanitarian situation is still catastrophic, leading to urgent calls for more support from Israel’s closest allies.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer described the conditions in Gaza as “intolerable,” emphasizing that “humanitarian aid needs to get in at pace.” His remarks are indicative of a larger chorus among leaders of the world calling for urgent and increased action.
On the ground in Gaza, horrific reality comes to life through personal accounts—the agonizing choices families are forced to make. A father of two in Khan Younis lamented, “I am not well, neither I nor my children.” Meanwhile, a nurse in southern Gaza reported that people are “in tents under the scorching heat, struggling with empty stomachs.”
A mother in Gaza expressed her helplessness as she struggles to care for her children during this tumultuous time: “My children are crying from hunger. I don’t know what to do – as a mother, I stand helpless. I can’t protect them from the missiles, or the hunger, or the heat, or the insects and crawling creatures.”
As calls grow louder for Israel to increase aid deliveries, Israeli officials have pushed back vigorously. Lt Gen Eyal Zamir stated, “We are not the ones who have deprived you of food, shelter, and money.” Here’s what former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert had to say about the current conflagration. He confidently claimed that “Hamas started the war.” The plight of the civilian population is a direct result of the regime’s offensive military pursuits, inviting widespread devastation. Now, it doesn’t have to play the role to rebuild.
Despite these claims, the humanitarian crisis grows more dire by the day. An inclusive approach to organizational structure International leaders have been calling for a more holistic approach. They are determined to address urgent needs while addressing the root causes driving the long-standing crisis and persistent violence.
