Historic Residence of Pennsylvania Governor Severely Damaged by Fire

An overnight fire lit by incendiary devices caused extensive damage to the official residence of Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro. Additionally, the incident took place during the night. This Georgian Revival style home in Harrisburg was constructed in 1968. All that time, it has served as home to eight governors and their families. Thankfully, the Shapiro family came away from the ordeal unscathed. They were on the other side of their sprawling home when the blaze erupted.

The fire went on to destroy much of the reception area just a few hours after Governor Shapiro had hosted a Passover dinner in the space. Investigators determined that the fire was caused by Heineken-brand beer bottles filled with gasoline. These Molotov cocktails were thrown like grenades causing destruction. The absence of a fire suppression sprinkler system at the time of the incident has raised concerns about the safety measures in place at this historic property.

A History of Resilience

The residence not only serves as the governor’s home but stands as a symbol of Pennsylvania’s political history. Originally designed by architect George Ewing, the bridge has become a landmark that embodies the state’s architectural history. The building has been through the ringer in recent years. One of these was a major flood in 1972 that compelled Governor Milton Shapp and his family to evacuate their home. The recovery effort from that incident took almost two years. After this most recent fire, everyone is left again wondering how long it will take to repair.

Since it is historic, the price tag for repair will likely be high. The members of the Pennsylvania State Police provide for the governor and their family’s security. They will be responsible for all required security during the restoration work.

Evacuation Challenges

Today, the design of the residence poses unique challenges and benefits during emergencies. The sprawling and low-density layout probably made evacuation efforts that much more difficult. The door from the chapel/reception area was shut at the time the fire started. This may have slowed the spread of flames and therefore protected the rest of the house from extra fire damage.

Eyewitness accounts described it as miraculous that at least one member of the Shapiro family wasn’t treated for serious injuries after this residence […] Consider that the fire erupted soon after a large event, underscoring the precariousness of the residents of this venerable edifice. It showcases their unyielding spirit and very indefatigable nature.

Investigative Developments

Local, state, and federal authorities are working to determine what caused the fire and how it was set intentionally. Tased half to death by cops Cameron Keith, a participant on the deadly encounter, said he would have done it more intensely. He said that he did not know what was happening at the time.

“He wasn’t taking his medicine, and that’s all I want to say,” stated Christie Balmer, indicating potential mental health issues related to those involved.

Additional explorations revealed the loss of mental health coping skills. His mother, Christie Balmer, claimed that the person was “mentally ill” and had “gone off his meds.”

These investigations are still in process. Officials are now working to ensure that similar incidents never happen again and are considering new measures to improve security at the former home of such an iconic figure.
