The incident unfolded in the San Juan Creek around 1:42 a.m., triggered by reports of two adults trapped in the water. Holding onto trees and bushes, the victims faced the peril of being swept away by the creek's powerful current.
The ordeal occurred after an atmospheric river unleashed heavy rain across Southern California on Thursday night. The deluge caused the San Juan Creek to surge uncontrollably, endangering anyone caught in its path. The swift water ultimately dragged one of the individuals downstream, escalating the urgency of the situation.
Responding to the emergency, the Orange County Fire Authority deployed personnel and a helicopter to the scene. The airborne team played a crucial role in the high-stakes rescue. In a moment of desperation, one victim leaped into the arms of a helicopter rescuer before being secured properly. Despite the dangerous conditions, both individuals were successfully extracted from the creek.
Authorities have not disclosed details regarding the ages or current status of the victims. Meanwhile, rescue crews worked diligently to clear affected roadways, including the Pacific Coast Highway and 101 freeway, which were impacted by the storm.
