Lawrence Okolie, the former WBO cruiserweight champion, is reportedly in negotiations to face seasoned heavyweight contender Luis Ortiz in the United Kingdom. The 32-year-old British boxer recently signed with Frank Warren's Queensberry Promotions and made a successful transition to the heavyweight division. Okolie aims to maintain an active schedule in his new weight class, aspiring for a title shot by year's end.
Okolie made an impactful heavyweight debut last December by delivering a first-round knockout against Hussein Muhamed in London. Known for his power and skill, Okolie boasts an impressive record of 21 wins, including 16 knockouts, against just one defeat. His reign as WBO cruiserweight champion ended when he suffered a loss to fellow Briton Chris Billam-Smith. Undeterred, Okolie has set his sights on conquering the heavyweight ranks.
Luis Ortiz, a formidable opponent with a record of 33 victories, 29 of which came by knockout, and three losses, brings a wealth of experience to the ring. The 45-year-old Cuban fighter last showcased his prowess with a victory over Francisco Cordero in January 2024. Prior to that, Ortiz experienced a points loss to Andy Ruiz in September 2022. Ortiz's career saw him briefly venture into the bridgerweight division, where he claimed the WBC title before returning to heavyweight.
Ortiz's history in the heavyweight division is marked by significant bouts, including his 2018 fight for the heavyweight title against Deontay Wilder, where he succumbed to a tenth-round knockout. Despite the setbacks, Ortiz remains a dangerous contender, eager to cement his status among the top heavyweights.
As talks progress for the potential UK showdown between Okolie and Ortiz, boxing fans eagerly anticipate a clash of styles and experience. Okolie's ambition to swiftly ascend the heavyweight rankings makes this match-up particularly intriguing. Both fighters bring their unique strengths to the table, promising a compelling contest.
