Harvard University Rejects Trump Administration’s Demands, Risking Federal Funding

Harvard University has announced that they will not accept a proposed settlement agreement with the Trump administration. The deal sought to place heavy restrictions on the university’s diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) programs. Most notably, the surprise deal would have forced the venerable institution to repeal these popular and effective initiatives in exchange for its share of federal funding. According to the American Council on Education, those problems have now made the university vulnerable to the loss of almost $9 billion in federal funding.

The Trump administration came out against DEI programs entirely, calling for their elimination. They further controversially called for the screening of international students for indicators of support for terrorism and/or anti-Semitism. This hardline approach is consistent with a growing national war on DEI programs on college and university campuses. The administration appears committed not just to enforce but to radically reshape educational policies.

In a letter to the university community, Harvard President Alan Garber slammed the administration’s overreach in no uncertain terms. He emphasized that “no government — regardless of which party is in power — should dictate what private universities can teach, whom they can admit and hire, and which areas of study and inquiry they can pursue.” His resignation speaks to Harvard’s preservation of their ethos of academic freedom as well as preservation against outside forces’ attempts at controlling further education’s narrative.

The Trump administration has already targeted a handful of universities by threatening to withdraw their federal funding. This clash points to a growing adversarial dynamic between the government and institutions of higher education. This is why Harvard is rightly refusing to cave to the administration’s bullying. This decision continues the trend of action by Cornell University and Northwestern University, both of whom had funding stopped for their responses to the Trump administration’s orders. As a result, the White House just froze more than $1 billion in federal funding for Cornell and nearly $790 million for Northwestern.

Columbia University rolled over on nearly every one of the White House’s demands. Columbia University additionally experienced $400 million in withdrawn funding due to the perception that it mishandled pro-Palestinian protests. This decision was roundly criticized by the administration and resulted in fears of widespread non-compliance. This gap in responses shows a rift in the world of higher education on what it looks like to respond to tensions in government.

The Trump administration has framed its actions as a defense of “the American values and institutions inscribed in the U.S. Constitution and Declaration of Independence.” By focusing on DEI initiatives, the administration seeks to reconstitute what it perceives to be a pro-liberal bias in academia. Critics argue that such measures threaten the principles of academic freedom and diversity that many institutions strive to uphold.

As Harvard grapples with the implications of its decision, it remains committed to its mission of fostering an inclusive environment for all students. We hope the university’s position becomes a rallying point for all other universities under similar duress from the federal government to similarly stand up.

The White House still hasn’t responded to inquiries for comment on Harvard’s move. Further, they have gone dark on their overall strategy with respect to DEI programs in higher education. As this situation develops, many will be watching how it affects not only Harvard but other universities navigating the challenging landscape of federal funding and administrative demands.
