Han Dong-Hoon's memoir, "The People Come First," released on February 26, 2024, has quickly climbed to the top of bestseller lists. The memoir provides a first-hand account of one of South Korea's most turbulent political sagas. Han, a key figure in the political arena, rose to prominence when Yoon was elected president in May 2022 by a razor-thin margin. As the leader of the People Power Party (PPP) and one of President Yoon's closest allies, Han found himself at the center of events that would dramatically reshape the country's political landscape.
Yoon's presidency took a controversial turn on December 3, 2023, when he declared martial law in a bid to eliminate "anti-state forces" and sympathizers of North Korea. This drastic measure sparked widespread protests, with thousands gathering outside the National Assembly building in Seoul to oppose the declaration. Amidst the unrest, Han played a pivotal role in overturning Yoon's martial law order, leading to its eventual lifting on the same day.
Despite initially opposing the impeachment motion against Yoon, Han's stance shifted dramatically. On December 7, while most PPP members boycotted a vote on the matter, Han chose to support the impeachment. This surprising move from someone once seen as Yoon's right-hand man led to Han being labeled a "traitor" by mainstream party members. Yet, Han maintained that his decision, though painful, was necessary for the nation's well-being.

The alliance between Han and Yoon had deep roots. Both attended Seoul National University and carved out their legal careers as prosecutors investigating corruption. This shared history solidified their bond over the years, making Han's eventual decision to turn against Yoon all the more shocking.
