Gwyneth Paltrow Embraces Balanced Eating After Years of Strict Dieting

Gwyneth Paltrow is an Academy Award winning actress best known for her performance in Shakespeare In Love. Of late, she’s been grabbing headlines with her revolutionary take on food and wellness. After years of promoting an uncompromising paleo lifestyle, Gwyneth Paltrow is finally eating crow. She’s slowly reintroducing foods she restricted in the past, including sourdough bread, pasta, and even cheese. Audra McDonald is preparing to make her return to the big screen. In the coming sports action film Marty Supreme, she’ll share the screen with Timothée Chalamet to boot.

Paltrow first rose to prominence after her performance in the 1999 film Shakespeare In Love garnered her an Academy Award. Her phenomenal performance won her an Academy Award for Best Actress. Since then, she’s gone on to star in many a blockbuster, from Sliding Doors to her widely known role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Though in recent years, she’s largely retreated from Tinseltown. Today, she works on building her lifestyle business and promoting wellness in the world.

The actress’s holistic approach to healthy living was largely inspired from a personal experience. Her father’s struggle with throat cancer ignited her passion for nutrition. She sold millions of diets under her brand but constantly encouraged the benefits of whole foods and a diet in balance. In a candid reflection on her dietary choices, Paltrow stated, “It’s the reason that Brad and I became paleo a few years ago now, although I’m a little bit sick of it, if I’m honest.”

For the past few years, she has been pretty hard core paleo, proportionately focusing on whole foods while totally cutting out grains and dairy. Lately, she’s found herself questioning this reaction as she gets older. Over the years, Paltrow admitted that her idea of a proper diet has gotten more nuanced. Now, she said, she’s more focused on managing inflammation and general wellness.

I’m re-entering the world of sourdough bread and occasionally some cheese— there, I admitted it. Just a taste of pasta after being so repressive for so many years,” she said. This is a true turning point in her revelation as she switches the foundation of her dietary philosophy by incorporating a wider variety of foods.

While restrictive diets haven’t been a walk in the park for Paltrow, these past experiences have informed her approach to nutrition today. She immersed herself in a stringent macrobiotic diet that she’s largely credited with helping save her life, which she called “a pretty cool chapter” in her life. This way of eating emphasizes locally-grown ingredients seen in the local cuisine of Japan’s mountainous regions. It prominently includes fish, vegetables, and rice, while eliminating dairy and sugar altogether.

“I really deepened my connection with food and the whole philosophy around macrobiotics,” Paltrow explained. “I felt so good, I wanted to share that with my dad, my friends and family.” She acknowledged that she’s sometimes “a little didactic about it.” It’s this last point that her passion for wellness leads her to be inflexible.

So, as Paltrow dives deeper into a more flexible view of food, culinary world experts are becoming interested in her changing diet. Priya Tew, a registered nutritionist, commended Paltrow’s move away from an impractical diet. She says that it’s wonderful to see Paltrow living the benefits of eating a more balanced, nutritious diet. Tew’s last point focused on diet—in particular, the need for a diverse diet as fundamental to health. He advised against eliminating food groups because it’s detrimental to your health.
