California Governor Gavin Newsom recently ignited widespread debate by expressing his views on transgender athletes in female sports, deeming it "deeply unfair" for transgender women and girls to compete. Newsom made these comments during an episode of his new podcast, "This is Gavin Newsom," marking a significant shift from his previous stance on LGBT rights. This change in tone comes amid ongoing discussions within his party about cultural influences on their significant defeat in the November elections.
Newsom highlighted a viral Trump campaign ad with the tagline, "Kamala is for they/them. President Trump is for you," to emphasize how his party is being politically "crushed" over transgender issues. Despite historically positioning himself to the left of his party on LGBT rights, including making California the first state to prohibit school districts from requiring staff to notify parents if a child changes gender identity, Newsom's recent comments have drawn criticism from various Democratic figures.
Former Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot labeled Newsom's remarks as "disgusting," reflecting the disapproval from some party members. Pramila Jayapal, a left-wing Democrat, argued against succumbing to what she described as anti-trans rhetoric. However, Seth Moulton, a moderate Democratic lawmaker, supported Newsom's stance, stating:
"More and more are willing to say what they've probably always thought – and that's a good thing." – Seth Moulton
Newsom's comments have also sparked reactions from California's LGBT legislative caucus, who released a statement expressing their dismay:
"We woke up profoundly sickened and frustrated by these remarks."
As a potential 2028 presidential contender, Newsom leads one of the most liberal states in the United States. His comments represent a notable departure from his longstanding advocacy for LGBT rights. The debate continues to unfold as Newsom navigates the political landscape, balancing his established reputation with emerging challenges.
