Glacial Lagoon Triggers Deadly Landslide in Huaraz, Peru

A disastrous landslide in Huaraz, Ancash, Peru, has resulted in two fatalities. This environmental disaster was caused by the overflow of a glacial lagoon into the Casca River. We believe that the National Institute for Research on Glaciers and Mountain Ecosystems (INAIGEM) just made a very important statement. Yet that’s what they confirmed as the lagoon’s overflow was the primary cause for this disaster.

The event played out when extremely heavy rainfall made the unique geologic feature—an outlet glacial lagoon—overflow its banks. A massive influx of water and rubble entered the Casca River. This immense force was what caused the landslide. Residents of Huaraz endured a dramatic sight as torrents of mud and debris came rushing down, destroying nearly everything in their path.

Local residents and security guards have rushed to respond after the tragedy. As they go, they are cleaning up what the mud and detritus left in its wake. Their work has been targeted to restore access to all areas impacted and to help keep their community safe. As relief efforts continue, responders and cleanup crews are still operating around the clock to clear the areas where the landslide left devastation.

According to a recent report by Reuters, the situation is still dire as even more rainfall would worsen already dangerous conditions in the area. Continued sweep efforts for the entire area is key to keeping immediate safe. Beyond that, they prevent future blown out bridges and washed away highways due to the glacial melting and instability the region is facing.

INAIGEM’s efforts dramatize the importance of regularly observing glacial lagoons. Climate change is currently accelerating glacier dynamics across the Andes, adding to the urgency of this vital monitoring. It’s a warning that experts say could be repeated elsewhere if we don’t take steps to prevent them.
