Gary Lineker, the renowned presenter of the BBC’s flagship football program Match of the Day, has expressed his concerns about the broadcaster’s handling of his recent controversies. He is threatened with suspension for his candid opinions about the humanitarian situation. He will continue to present live coverage of big events such as the World Cup and FA Cup.
Lineker, as one of the most popular BBC faces and voices, has been a central element of the BBC for decades. His commentary on pressing global matters, including refugee policies and conflicts, has sometimes put him at odds with the corporation’s expectations of impartiality. Like last year, when Lineker felt the BBC’s heavy hand before they renewed his contract. He believed it was intended to push him out of Match of the Day.
In February, the BBC removed the documentary Gaza: How to Survive a War Zone from its iPlayer platform. Reflecting on whether he would have approached these issues differently if he had foreseen the repercussions, Lineker responded, “No I wouldn’t, because of all the nonsense that came with it… It was a ridiculous overreaction that was just a reply to someone that was being very rude.”
