Galatasaray has announced its intention to initiate criminal proceedings against Fenerbahce manager Jose Mourinho following his controversial comments after a recent match between the two Turkish clubs. The incident, which unfolded after a 0-0 draw, saw Mourinho make inflammatory remarks regarding the behavior of the home bench and criticize the use of Turkish referees. The statements, made during a post-match news conference, have sparked outrage, with Galatasaray accusing Mourinho of making "racist statements."
The contentious remarks by Mourinho transpired after a match refereed by Slovenian Slavko Vincic. Both clubs had requested a foreign official for the game due to previous tensions regarding Turkish refereeing. Mourinho, who previously described the refereeing environment in Turkey as "toxic," expressed his gratitude to Vincic, stating, "thank you for coming here, you come for a big match." He further asserted that with a Turkish referee, the match would have been a "disaster."
"I have to thank the referee. After the big dive in the first minute and their bench jumping like monkeys on the top of the kid… with a Turkish referee you would have a yellow card after one minute and after five minutes I would have to change him." – Jose Mourinho
Mourinho's comments have not only ignited anger from Galatasaray but also prompted them to submit official complaints to both Uefa and Fifa. The club is determined to address what it perceives as derogatory rhetoric from the Fenerbahce manager.
"Since the commencement of his managerial duties in Turkey, Fenerbahce manager Jose Mourinho has persistently issued derogatory statements directed towards the Turkish people. Today, his discourse has escalated beyond merely immoral comments into unequivocally inhumane rhetoric." – Galatasaray
Mourinho, a 62-year-old veteran manager with a storied career including stints at Chelsea, Manchester United, and Tottenham, was appointed as Fenerbahce's manager last summer. Known for his outspoken nature, he has faced bans and fines earlier in the season for previous controversial statements. Despite his achievements, including winning the Champions League twice, his tenure in Turkey has been marred by controversy.
