Former U.S. Representative Mia Love Passes Away at 49

Mia Love, the trailblazing former U.S. Representative from Utah, has passed away at the age of 49 due to brain cancer. She was elected to represent Utah’s 4th congressional district, becoming the first Black Republican woman ever elected to Congress. Her extraordinary story doesn’t start with her appointment, though — she’s a daughter of Haitian immigrants. Today, she is emerging as a leading political voice, fueled by her passion for the American dream and dedication to civic duty.

The son of immigrants, Love’s parents came to the United States with just $10 in their pocket. Their experience made her parents true believers in the unlimited potential promise of America. Taught to love her country in spite of its imperfections, Love learned to appreciate the fruits of hard work and entrepreneurial spirit. Her advocacy eventually led her to run for office herself, winning a seat on the Saratoga Springs city council in 2003, beginning a long, successful political career. Her entry into politics would be the beginning of a story filled with determination, service, and perseverance.

In 2012, Love became the first black woman elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from the state of Utah, after defeating Democratic incumbent Jim Matheson. She did not give up, and in 2014 she made Albany history by winning one of the city’s congressional seats. This special election victory earned her the distinction of being the first Black Republican woman ever to represent Utah in Congress.

While in office, Love earned a reputation as a maverick who would cross her Republican party’s leadership and go against the established party lines. In 2016, she made national news by not attending the Republican National Convention. She took a strong stand telling the world she would never ever vote for Donald Trump.

"In the end, I hope that my life will have mattered and made a difference for the nation I love and the family and friends I adore," Love once expressed.

Those words are a testament to her lifelong belief in, and love for, her country and community.

Despite speaking political dangers, Love was unapologetic and uncompromised in her faith. She placed a particular importance on remaining unified and warned against those who seek to divide in today’s political landscape.

"Some have forgotten the math of America — whenever you divide you diminish," she stated.

Her legacy is one of breaking barriers and advocating for the classic principles of freedom and liberty.

"I hope you will see the America I know in the years ahead, that you will hear my words in the whisper of the wind of freedom and feel my presence in the flame of the enduring principles of liberty," Love said, encapsulating her vision for the nation.
