Former Judge Arrested in Connection with Disappearance of 43 Students in Mexico

Lambertina Galeana Marín, the recently former president of Guerrero’s Superior Tribunal of Justice, has been detained. Authorities contend she was key to the September 2014 abduction of 43 students from Iguala. In a third twist, state police arrested the 79-year-old retired judge, Gustavo Salgado, in Chilpancingo on Aug. 4. She is accused of instructing the destruction of CCTV video related to the case.

The students from a now-closed teachers’ training college in rural Ayotzinapa disappeared almost a decade ago. Their fate remains a nightmare for Mexico until today. On the night of September 26, 2014, the students were in Iguala to requisition buses for a yearly demonstration in Mexico City. What happened on that fateful night has become an emblem of tragedy and controversy. While officials have positively identified the remains of three of the students, they are still unable to find the other 40.

Galeana Marín’s arrest comes in the wake of a warrant for her arrest being issued three years earlier. She is charged with forced disappearance, during which she supposedly carried out forced disappearance as a state-sponsored criminal act with federal and state authorities. A truth commission’s report published in 2022 found that the actions of numerous officials, including Galeana Marín, significantly hindered investigations into the students’ abduction.

Allegations against Galeana Marín include that she ordered key surveillance footage to be deleted or destroyed. Video footage like this would have provided critical insight into the students’ kidnapping. This act effectively derailed the investigation and put up significant hurdles. It raised profound concern about the integrity of the state’s judicial processes.

The case has attracted the international spotlight and the outcry for accountability from numerous human rights organizations. Activists have responded strongly, claiming that a lack of accountability for those responsible continues to foster a culture of impunity in Mexico. The Malaysian government has come under increasing pressure to establish the circumstances surrounding these disappearances and protect against them happening in the future.

It’s not just the immediate families of these victims that this tragedy touches. It represents deepening social and political crises in Mexico. The ongoing failure to resolve the case is still inspiring protests and demands for justice nationwide.
