Fatal Encounter: The Pizzagate Gunman Shot by Police in North Carolina

Edgar Maddison Welch, 36, was fatally shot by police officers during a routine traffic stop in Kannapolis, North Carolina, on January 4, 2023. Welch, previously known for his involvement in the infamous "Pizzagate" incident in Washington D.C., had an outstanding arrest warrant for felony probation violation. The traffic stop leading to Welch's death is currently under investigation by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation.

Officer Brooks Jones and Officer Caleb Tate were conducting the traffic stop when they recognized Welch from a previous arrest. Welch was driving a gray 2001 GMC Yukon at the time and was found with three loaded firearms in the vehicle, including a 9mm AR-15 assault rifle. Despite the officers' attempts to manage the situation, the confrontation escalated, resulting in Welch being shot and subsequently transported to a hospital. He succumbed to his injuries two days later.

Welch gained notoriety in 2016 when he walked into the Comet Ping Pong restaurant in Washington D.C., armed with a loaded weapon. He was attempting to investigate an unfounded internet conspiracy theory regarding a supposed child trafficking operation. Welch was accused of trying to break into a locked room by forcefully opening the door and firing his assault rifle multiple times. He was sentenced to four years in prison for his actions during the "Pizzagate" incident.

"Raiding a pedo ring” and sacrificing “the lives of a few for the lives of many," Welch had infamously claimed during the incident.

Following his prison sentence, Welch was ordered to stay away from the Comet Ping Pong restaurant and pay $5,744 in restitution for the property damage caused. He was also subjected to three years of supervised release, during which he was required to undergo a mental health assessment.

During the traffic stop in Kannapolis, Officer Brooks Jones and Officer Caleb Tate discharged their weapons, while a third officer present at the scene did not fire. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is overseeing the investigation to ensure an impartial review of the incident.

"This practice ensures there is no bias during the investigation and the findings of the investigation are presented to the District Attorney without any influence by a member of the department," stated an unnamed Police Chief regarding the ongoing investigation protocols.

The tragic end of Edgar Maddison Welch's life marks a poignant conclusion to a series of violent events stemming from misinformation and conspiracy theories. His actions in 2016 continue to serve as a reminder of the potential real-world consequences of false narratives spread online.
